Weekend 2: Dido and Aeneas
Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas In concert Amanda Gardner-Porter as Dido Beth DuRoy as Belinda Philip Haynie as Aeneas Timothy Wilds as the Sorceress Dr. C. Michael Porter conductor
Henry Purcell’s (c. 1659 – 1695) English opera, set to a text of Nahum Tate, was first performed in 1689 at Josias Priest's School for Young Gentlewomen. Dido and Aeneas is based on a story from the fourth book of Virgil's Aeneid, of the legendary Queen of Carthage, Dido, and the Trojan refugee Aeneas. When Æneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love. As the story descends to its tragic conclusion, Æneas is forced to depart, leaving Dido to sing the famous “When I am laid in Earth.” Our cast and orchestra, performing on period instruments, will present a dramatic concert rendition of the work in both Asheville and Hendersonville. Friday, March 19, 7:30 p.m. St. Matthias Episcopal, Asheville
Saturday, March 20, 7:30 p.m. Trinity Presbyterian, Hendersonville
