Henry Purcell’s (c. 1659 – 1695) English opera, set to a text of Nahum Tate, was first performed in 1689 at Josias Priest's School for Young Gentlewomen.   Dido and Aeneas is based on a story from the fourth book of Virgil's Aeneid, of the legendary Queen of Carthage, Dido, and the Trojan refugee Aeneas. When Æneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love.  As the story descends to its tragic conclusion, Æneas is forced to depart, leaving Dido to sing the famous “When I am laid in Earth.”

Our cast and orchestra, performing on period instruments, will present a dramatic concert rendition of the work in both Asheville and Hendersonville.
